Pet Updates - Chilli, Cayenne and Cocoa.

The Triplets Cocoa, Chilli and Cayenne - One Day Old

Cayenne (Boar) - One Day Old
Chilli (Sow) - One Day Old

Cocoa (Sow) - One Day Old

These little cuties have been spoiled with cuddles from everyone who visits because they are just so damn adorable! They are all really big eaters and at this stage they are all still together with their Mum Wobby. However, being three weeks old now, it will only be a matter of time before Cayenne has to move out. I am hoping that him and Marduk will be friends but only time will tell. I will leave him a little longer as I haven't yet noticed any rumble-strutting going on.

The Triplets - One Week Old

From birth Cayenne had a sticky eye. I attended to it several times a day with soft cotton pads and saline. It cleared up two days later. Yesterday I noticed Chilli now has what appears to be the same problem. Again, only in one eye. I have been treating it the same and in just one day, it seems to be much better. None of them appear to be sick, they are all eating and drinking well. So I am not quite sure what the cause is but I really hope once Chilli's eye has cleared up that this will be the end of it.

Almost Two Weeks Old

Three Weeks Old

Although they were originally slow to take to pumpkin vines they now love them. They also adore cucumber and I have to cut it into small pieces or there are arguments over whose piece it is! Their coats are slightly different to those of Hasana and Marduk who are their half-siblings (same sire.) I suspect they are going to have slightly longer coats than the other pair. Being bred from pets with unknown lineage anything is possible.

Abby and Wobby wont be having any more pups though as we have enough pets. After each having had one litter each, they will both now be retiring from baby-making.

UPDATE: It would seem that the babies were experiencing a condition known as entropion. This occurs more frequently in curly haired varieties of cavy and is basically when their eyelashes curl back in and irritate the eye. This irritation can cause some apparent cloudiness and also stickiness, as the eye secretes excess fluid in an attempt to remove the eyelash.

The best cause of treatment as it turns out, is to do what I had done. Flush the eye with saline and push away stray eyelashes or curly hair that appears to be intruding on the eye. It can also be helpful to lubricate the eye with a basic human eye lubricant from the chemist. With this treatment, the issue will usually be corrected quite quickly.

As for Chilli and Cayenne, their eyes were both healthy again within a couple of days and I have learned something new.
